The Shaman has been out long enough at this point—almost 8 years at the time of this writing in early 2025—that I won't be revealing any groundbreaking insights into the design in this review to anyone who is at all familiar with Spyderco's folders. But here are the basics, anyway: Designed by Spyderco founder Sal Glesser based on his iconic Native 5 folder, the Shaman is arguably the company's flagship regular production model, at least based on pricing. In hand, its substantial, generously contoured G10 handle scales make the knife feel more like a premium fixed-blade belt knife than a pocket knife in terms of comfort. But despite the handle's girth, the Shaman still manages to fit comfortably in all but the most restrictive of jeans or work pants pockets. The knife comes with quite the beefy blade to go with its hand-filling handle. It definitely isn't the best slicer in Spyderco's product line-up because of the above-average blade stock thickness, but given the blade's full-flat grind & broadness, it still comes down to a pretty acute BTE geometry, making it cut much better than its appearance might initially suggest. All that mass behind the edge should also help it better stand up to lateral forces (within reason). What sets this version of the Shaman apart from the standard model is, of course, the use of Spyderco's proprietary SPY27 steel instead of S30V. I wouldn't call it an upgrade per se, more like a lateral move: SPY27 trades some edge retention in exchange for a bit more toughness & corrosion resistance & increased ease of sharpening compared to S30V, at least on paper. Depending on one's use context, this might make SPY27 a better choice, especially since the SPY27 & S30V Shamans are priced similarly. As someone who has used both steels in the same model extensively in a work setting however, they are close enough to each other in cutting performance & durability that I'd be hard-pressed to tell them apart with any degree of reliability based on those characteristics alone. I do find that SPY27 seems to respond to strops & hones more readily than S30V—probably due to its slightly lower vanadium carbide volume—but that's more of a feel-based impression than anything else. Also worth noting: the SPY27 Shaman has a satin finish on the blade, as opposed to the stonewashed finish of the standard S30V model. I wish Spyderco had stuck with the stonewash, personally, but that's just aesthetic preference, and one could argue that the satin finish further emphasizes SPY27's stainlessness advantage over S30V. The Shaman (in any steel) is easily one of the most robust production folders on the market today, and has the most comfortable handle for extended cutting tasks that I've used, full stop. Still, it's a knife that I'm more likely to recommend to those who are already well into their knife journey & are looking to explore more premium territory. It's a great knife to be sure, definitely one of Spyderco's best, but no one 'needs' a Shaman, and there are certainly better-value options—such as the aforementioned Native 5, and especially the Sage 5 Lightweight—for those looking for their first (or second, or third) Spyderco.

I bought this Spyderco Shaman for my Shaman collection. It's also my first spy27 steel Spyderco. The ergonomics is good, very sharp factory edge. I'm still evaluating it and it's part of my rotation. Its not too heavy so it's a nice EDC( every day carry), I carry 10 ounce knives often so its half of that weighing in at 5.2 ounces. Spyderco's leaf blade geometry is perfect for daily cutting tasks. I highly recommend this knife and pretty well every Spyderco Shaman regardless of steel or edge type. This is my fifth Shaman. Thank-you House of Knives!
